Mars in the 1st house
A waiter is swamped at Sunday brunch, and while your friends debate waving him over, you've already fetched the coffee pot from the counter. The 1st house is the self you show, from your body to the impression you leave in a stranger's first minute with you. Its starting edge is your Ascendant, or rising sign. Mars is the planet of drive and anger, the push that gets you out of your chair. Put Mars here and that push sits at the front door of your personality. The 1st is also the natural house of Aries, the sign Mars rules, so the planet is on familiar ground.
What Mars in the 1st house feels like
You tend to feel your wants in your body first. Restlessness shows up as a bouncing knee in a long meeting, and when something annoys you, your jaw sets before you've found the words. People read you fast because there's very little delay between what you feel and what your face does. That can make you seem bolder than you feel inside, since to an onlooker your nerves and your nerve look much the same.
Starting is your natural speed. You'd sooner try the new climbing gym tonight and learn the rules on the wall than read the beginner guide first. Being stuck in someone else's slow lane, like a group that can't pick a restaurant, can make you itchy within minutes. You also tend to own your choices out loud. When you get something wrong, you usually say so and move on, which spares you a lot of private stewing and makes you easier to trust than people expect.
Strengths
When a room needs someone to break an awkward silence, at a PTA meeting or a tense family dinner, you tend to be that person. Your willingness to go first, visibly, gives quieter people permission to follow, and they often remember you for it.
People rarely have to guess what you want from them, because it's on your face and usually in your first sentence. In a tense conversation that's a relief. Others can respond to your real position, and disagreements tend to get settled while they're still small.
You tend to be most at ease when your body is busy, whether that's dragging a friend's couch up three flights or being first into the cold lake on a camping trip. That ease makes you good company on any plan that needs a little nerve.
Challenges
Irritation crosses your face before you've decided whether to show it, and people can take a flash of impatience as a verdict on them. A coworker may think you're angry when you're only hungry. A quick 'that's not about you, I'm just tired' clears up most of the confusion.
You can say yes to a plan or a fight before you know what it involves, then feel boxed in by your own speed. Next time something exciting lands in your lap, try 'let me get back to you tonight' and see whether it still appeals after dinner.
Your presence can crowd out people who need a few seconds to warm up, and they may stop offering ideas when you're around. In a group, try asking the quietest person what they think before you share your own view, and then let their answer stand for a moment.
Mars in the 1st house in love
In dating, you tend to make your interest obvious. You might cross the bar to say hello, or text the morning after a first date while other people are still debating the rules about waiting. Attraction for you is often physical first: you notice how someone moves and laughs, and you like being noticed back with the same frankness.
Once you're with someone, you look for a partner who doesn't wilt when you're blunt. You can mistake a gentle partner's silence for agreement, then feel blindsided when resentment surfaces months later. Partners who keep up with your pace often love how lively you make ordinary plans feel. The ones who need more time do better when you ask, plainly, 'Is this too fast for you?' and then wait for the whole answer.
Mars in the 1st house at work
At work you tend to be visible whether you aim for it or not. Volunteering for the presentation or pulling a stalled meeting toward a decision comes naturally to you. Colleagues tend to remember your name after a single project. You'd like to be judged by what you did this week more than by what's on your résumé.
The friction comes when your style reads as pushy. A manager may hear confidence as impatience, and a careful teammate may feel rushed by your first draft. Clear ownership suits you best: a task that's yours and a result with your name on it. When that isn't possible, saying out loud which part you'll take keeps you from grabbing everyone else's.
Who has Mars in the 1st house
Overall about 1 in 12 people have Mars in the 1st house: 8.3% in our simulation of US births from 1950 to 2010. The odds move a lot with the rising sign, from 10.5% with Aquarius rising to 6.8% with Cancer rising. Houses in the usual (Placidus) system are uneven, because some signs climb over the horizon much faster than others at US latitudes.
By rising sign
By Mars sign
With Mars in Sagittarius the chance is 10.2%; with Mars in Cancer, 6.7%. The pattern has a simple cause. In Gemini, Cancer and Leo, Mars sits north of the celestial equator, so from the US it spends longer above the horizon each day, which favors the 7th to 12th houses; in Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius it spends longer below, which favors the 1st to 6th. How we worked this out
The birth hours it comes from
Mars in the 1st house can come from any birth hour, but births around 5 a.m. are about 4.7 times as likely to have it as births around 5 p.m. Over the years Mars spends more of its time on the far side of the Sun, which ties its house loosely to the Sun's, and so to the clock.

Mars in the 1st house through the signs
The sign Mars is in sets its style; the house says where that style shows up.
Mars in its own sign, in the house Aries rules, doubles the effect. You tend to look ready to sprint, and your temper shows instantly, then clears as fast.
Mars in Aries guideYour first impression is calm and solid, almost slow. The drive shows later, as a refusal to be moved once you've planted your feet on something you care about.
Mars in Taurus guideYou read as quick and wired, talking with your hands and interrupting with good questions. When you're bored, it shows as fidgeting and a sudden change of subject.
Mars in Gemini guideTraditional astrology calls Cancer a hard sign for Mars. Up front it can make you seem soft, until someone you love is threatened and you're suddenly the one standing up.
Mars in Cancer guideYou walk in as if you were expected. Pride and warmth are both plain on your face, and being ignored in a room can annoy you faster than being challenged.
Mars in Leo guideYour drive looks like competence: sleeves rolled up and an eye already on what needs fixing. Annoyance comes out as a tight-lipped correction more often than a raised voice.
Mars in Virgo guideLibra is an awkward sign for Mars, so your push wears good manners. People see the charm first and may miss how hard you're steering until the decision is made.
Mars in Libra guideMars also rules Scorpio, so you seem intense even in silence. Strangers often feel watched in a way they can't name, and your calm can read as a warning.
Mars in Scorpio guideYou come across as game for anything, laughing loudly and saying the blunt thing. Impatience surfaces when plans shrink or someone tries to fence you in.
Mars in Sagittarius guideCapricorn gives Mars its traditional peak, so you look composed and purposeful. People tend to hand you responsibility early, sometimes before you've asked for it.
Mars in Capricorn guideYour edge shows as independence. You may dress or talk against the grain of the room, and you bristle when anyone assumes they can predict your next move.
Mars in Aquarius guideYou can look soft-focus and unhurried, so people don't brace for your push. It comes in tides: weeks of drifting, then one afternoon when you change three things at once.
Mars in Pisces guideAn everyday example
Imani's new apartment building has a laundry room with one working dryer and a sign-up sheet nobody follows. In her second week she knocks on the super's door, then writes a polite note to every neighbor proposing a schedule and tapes it above the machines. Two people thank her in the hallway. Someone leaves a sticky note on it calling her 'the dryer police'. Her first impulse is to rip it down and post a reply. She adds a line at the bottom of her note instead: 'Happy to swap slots, knock on 4B.' By the end of the month, the man who wrote the sticky note is asking her to hold Thursday night for him.
What people get wrong about Mars in the 1st house
People assume Mars in the 1st makes someone aggressive or hard to be around. Often it means that what other people keep behind their eyes, you show. The intensity is mostly visible effort and an honest face. Many with Mars here are shy in new groups; they just can't hide it when they're keen or cross. It also gets confused with a fiery rising sign, and that's a separate thing: your rising sign sets the style, and Mars here adds the push.
When someone else's Mars falls in your 1st house
A person with Mars in your 1st house can get a reaction out of you just by walking in. You may feel more awake around them, more aware of your body and how you look, and quicker to say what you think. That can be thrilling in a crush and grating in a coworker. They may comment on your appearance or push you to try things, and you can come away feeling braver or criticized. If it starts to feel like a contest, tell them which of their pushes help and which only make you defensive.

Questions people ask
Is Mars in the 1st house attractive?
Often, in the sense that people notice you. Mars here tends to give a direct gaze and a physical confidence that many people find attractive. It doesn't guarantee a particular look. What draws others in is usually your obvious appetite for life, and the same quality can put off someone who prefers a softer approach. Your rising sign and your Venus fill in the rest of the picture.
Is Mars in the 1st house like having Aries rising?
They overlap, but they're different. Aries rising means Aries is the sign on your Ascendant, which makes Mars your chart ruler wherever it sits. With Mars in the 1st, the planet itself sits in the house of self, in whatever sign it happens to occupy. Someone with Pisces rising and Mars in the 1st can look gentle and still act fast. If you have both, the Mars style comes through twice.
Does Mars in the 1st house mean a bad temper?
Mostly it makes your temper easier to see. Anger tends to reach your face quickly and pass fairly soon, so people may think you're angrier than you are. How hot or slow it runs depends a lot on Mars's sign: a Taurus Mars in the 1st simmers for ages, while an Aries Mars flares and fades. Noticing your early signals, like a clenched jaw, gives you a moment to choose your words.
Why does another app put my Mars in the 12th house?
Houses depend on your exact birth time and on the house system. Skyprint calculates houses with Placidus, which most Western astrologers use. Whole-sign houses, an older method that's popular again, can put a planet in the neighboring house. A Mars in your rising sign but just above the Ascendant counts as 12th house in Placidus and 1st house in whole-sign. A birth time that's off by a quarter of an hour can shift things too.
